question on Brumation

claymore Dec 12, 2004 11:24 AM

I was just curious; how many of you guy have beardies that are in burmation? If they are in burmation, then how did you get your beardies to go into burmation? Mine are not showing any signs at all. I've cut the hours back to 10 hrs; the temps are still around 100-105 on the warm side & 75-80 on the cool side. Both of my beardies are adults from 1 year to 1 1/2 years old. I doubt that they have gone through brumation before because the pet store I got them from did not know a lot about reptiles in general. (No wonder they went out of business)

Thanks
Lance

I think that 10/14 day is a good way to simulate Winter for your dragons, but they are the ones who decide to brumate. I've got 3 of 14 that are in brumation and are all less than 2 years. Next year when all are in the 1 year and up range I might help them along with brumation, but I personally am not trying to get them into a brumation cycle at less that 1 year.

I've just started waking some of mine up. I've still got 10 that are still fast asleep. I'm trying to cycle them so I won't have 21 females breeding at the same time.

So do they really need to breed if I am not planning on breeding the two of them? I’ve heard that burmation can be risky if not done right. I just wouldn't want to take any unnecessary risks. They seem to enjoy each others company though.

No, you don't have to breed them. However, if you don't separate the two, they will breed with or without brumation. You also need to keep in mind that female beardies, like most other lizards, can develop infertile eggs without breeding. No male is necessary.
