Does anyone have a report of Bristol Show?

longtang Jul 02, 2003 02:28 PM

Hey all:

Did any of you go to the bristol show? How was it? Anyone see anything cool? Do anything Fun? Buy anything interesting?

Let's hear you share your Bristol experience. It was too far for me to make (5 hour drive). However, I am thinking about going to Hamburg in OCT or Aug.

cheers.

Happy Hotings.

I went and felt the venomous section was pretty limited. It was my first venomous show though so I enjoyed it. There's nothing like seeing a huge Gaboon and having it hiss at you. I would say the most notable snakes there were the Gabs and Rhinos(because they're my favorite snakes) and the Cantils, which are REALLY neat. They did have some neat showcase animals, they had a huge Water monitor and a King Cobra(I'm horrible with approximating lengths, but I'd say about 8 or 9ft.) What I loved about the King was that he kinda raised his hood when I crouched down to stare at him. I must say though that was pretty intimidating. I don't know how some of you can handle a snake(a cobra do be exact) that big. There is just something so majestic about O.hannah too...

This might make things a bit clearer.
BRIEF SUMMARY:
1.) I loved seeing the Gabs and Rhinos, they had some really nice Rhinos and one very large BEAUTIFUL Gab. I bet though that the Gabs and Rhinos are at EVERY show(go figure).
2.) I found the Puff Adder to be surprisingly a very neat snake.
3.) I fell in love with the Hairy Bush viper (latin name?)
4.) I also fell in love with the Cantil, very neat snake
5.) The EDB's were a joy to see (Favorite Crotalid).
Dissapointments:
1.) Didn't see a Yellow Eyelash Viper (Schlegeli sp??)
2.) Only had ONE baby Red Spitting Cobra and he was tucked away in a deli cup. I wanted to see a juvi/adult or atleast see the baby moved to the front of the stack. (Can you believe they put him behind some Russian cobras and I believe the others were from Pakistan)
Nonvenomous side was the usual. I felt bad for some of the venomous though because they were clearly stressed(Though some seemed COMPLETELY oblivious). For example: As I said that big Gabby was hissing at me. There was also a very nice EDB that had broken off his rattle in one of the plastic boxes. There was also another EDB on another table that was right up front and was rattling/stressing. Other then those two, a lot of the baby rattlers seemed to be happy exploring their deli cups.
Take care,
CCD

Thank you very richly. I enjoyed reading about your writings about the Bristol show. I couldn't be there, so it was nice to read about it. (BTW, I was also in awe of the Gabbies when I went to Hamburg).

I am still undecided about whether I am going to the Aug Hamburg show or not. It is going to be quite a drive, but I know I would enjoy the show.

I went to my first hot show on 14 June @ Hamburg PA. That is where I got my copperhead and my pigmy rattle snake. Hots are quickly becoming a passion. I am studying right now into what othe hots are within my experience level. I am reading about the sidewinder. It seems like a good next snake because of its small size and low venom load. I still have a month to do more reading and ask questions.

Did you see any sidewinders? They are cool.

thx again for the report!
cheers. Happy hotings.
