popping

i tried sexing my knoblochi but i don't think i'm doing it right. i was taught how to do it once but i wasn't sure how far up the snake to start. someone told me 10-15 scales. i tried that and the snake seems to be female but i feel something inside. i wasn't sure if that meant it was a male and i just wasn't popping it right or something. if anyone could help me with tips or advice on popping my snakes i would appreciate it. also how do you tell if they are male. there will be like two little things that stick out right? i guess the snakes penis? i'm not sure if thats what you call it on a snake. anyway thanks for any help

you mention "how far UP the snake to start," remember the hemipenes (that's the term) retract into the TAIL end of the snake, so you start rolling your thumb up towards the snake's vent from the END of the snake towards the vent. I wasn't sure what you meant by "up" the snake and just wanted to clarify that.

I've never noticed feeling anything and i've popped hundreds, probably thousands, of snakes. The hemipenes are too small. It's strictly a visual thing.

I've found that knob babies are harder to pop accurately than other kingsnake babies. They are not really a good snake to learn on.
