i know there are a couple of you here that dont like to use any kind of loose substrait, but ive been using this, and thought it would be safe. i just got home from work, and im changing it tomarrow (monday 12/13). but any way, i dont know how meny of you use this substrait, or have thought about it. but i work at a major petstore chain, and we got an email today. it sais that ESU crushed walnut shell lizard litter bedding should absolutly under no surcomstance be used unless there is a screen ontop of it. its almost 100% a death wish for any reptile that eats it because is not digestable at all. so i thought id let you all know just incase your using it.
thanx for reading.

It's about time the petstores wised up!
Thanks for the heads-up. (I've never used the walnut substrate)

The key is experienced. If the pet stores tell people it's ok they dont know any better.

jeune18 Dec 13, 2004 02:09 AM

well he said people on the forums were getting mad at him. i thought if you made it to the forums, you were told about walnut substrate, like a rite of passage or something

oops, open mouth and insert foot. i wasn't making a jab at you. i didn't realize you said you had used it.
i know it comes up in here from time to time so i thought we all knew it was bad stuff and i thought you were saying people were being mean to you for saying it was bad stuff!
well i am glad you are changing the substrate.

id like to consider my self experianced, but yeah i do use it, and i dont mind you thnking that. this is how i was looking at it, and obviosly it was wrong(im very seldomly wrong, but ill admit it when i am). i was thinking, well uro's, and beardie's bellies are made for veggies. so walnutshels, veggies, close enough. it cant be that bad on the stomics. that was my logic and reasoning. again, i was wrong. but any way if you go to the bearded forum, or the leo gecko forum. substrait is a constants argument. im mearly trying to be helpfull. and it isnt in writing just yet. it was an email that was sent out, and i dont think i was sapposta open my mouth about it.

Well, even if you weren't supposed to talk about it, it's good you did. If even one lizard is switched off of it before getting lacerated intestines, it's worth it - and good for you for putting it out there, even if some people are snotty about it. Substrate is a hot topic here sometimes, too, but folks are usually civil about it!

Walnut shells are nasty enough that they're used in industrial media blasting for removing surface coatings as an alternative to sand/ball bearings/other abrasive materials.

This site has some basic info mentioning it, Google at will.
http://palimpsest.stanford.edu/waac/wn/wn14/wn14-3/wn14-310.html

I've had reptiles for just over a month now, and in researching their care it was apparent that walnut shells were recommended against after very little reading and it was mentioned in very many sources including all the Uro books I've picked up.

I guess if people first researched things ahead of time (I rarely trust store employees regarding authority on ANY product) and selected their substrate logically based on that, there wouldn't even be an argument...

xNeViNx Dec 13, 2004 03:07 PM

r you saying that i didnt do any research? cause ill tell you this, saprising, i have never once seen anything online about walnut shells. i do a good amount of research on all and any reptile befor i get one.

I'm not saying anything about you, but it was very clear in a very short amount of time that walnut shells are bad news after my research. There aren't that many Uro sites out there and they pretty much all point to each other, so discovery in and of its own isn't an esoteric thing. Of course, that's even just looking at Uro sites.

AFAIR, this book that I've seen in each shop mentions it:

o ok. sorry if that sounded like i was snapping. when i think about it, i did see that it was bad, and that was my fault. that was so long ago, and i never put 2 and 2 togeather.

It's amazing how experienced herpers don't use this stuff and haven't for many, many years and pet stores are just now realizing that it is bad stuff. It is the same with that calcium sand they sell. Big huge claims about how easily it's digested and the benefits of the calcium but everyone knows it's a lizard killer.
