question on FOOD

aimee_s Dec 12, 2004 07:33 PM

Hi Everyone

I was just wondering if it would be okay to feed my crested gecko (which I now think is female.. will post pictures later) the following food items:

1) silkworms
2) mealworm as a treat
3) wax worm as a treat once a month

Right now, he's eating baby food every night mixed with CGD (peach, apricot, and fruit medley) with crickets 3-4 times a week (2 at a time). I bought him the first week of October as a juvenile, so I'm assuming he's an adult now - I don't know his actual age. Maybe 8 months? 9 months?

Anyway, I just got a bearded dragon and will start feeding it silkworms next month. I will purchase 1 or 2 leos soon and will have those on crickets, mealworms, and silkworms. My beardie has 1 wax worm per week as a treat and my future leos will have the same deal. That's where my idea came from - just wondering if cresties can handle those.

I'm also considering a gargoyle gecko, but not too sure yet...

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP!

I'm also very curious if they will accept those foods. I tried feeding a few silk worms to my cresteds when they first came in, but they didn't touch them for the two nights they were in the cage. They may have just been stressed.

well, i'm assuming he'd take the silkworms because last week, when feeding my bearded dragon a wax worm treat - i wanted to see if my crestie would take it.

so, while he was still hiding in his coconut hide, i tossed the smallest wax worm i had near his fruit dish (paper towel substrate). right when the wax worm moved, he dashed out of the coconut and ate it and licked his lips.

i checked to see for any changes (i don't have a scale) and so far, he's still eating his fruits with CGD and a couple crickets every few days. no signs of addiction or sickness - same coloration and everything. poop is still normal- same size poop & urate. that was the first and last i ever gave. so i'm assuming he'd take the silkworm. i'm going to test silkworms on him in january when i get my first batch.

thanks for all of your replies! i'm just anxious to hear if it IS dangerous for them! lol... then i'd hope for the best. i just tested ONCE
