Ig Injury help!!!

SAge Dec 12, 2004 08:03 PM

Rosebud is a 4 y.o. male green iguana-- Somehow, he sustained a bleeding injury on his lower jaw, on the direct front portion of his snout. It scabs over quite nicely, but due to his mating season behavior he has torn it off roughly every third or fourth day, starting back from square one with an open bleeding wound. The wound is not deep-- It appears to be confined to the area of a single scale, which I'm guessing was ripped off with one of the earlier scabs.

He has been revcieving daily antibiotic and anti fungal applications to the wound, and presently there are no signs of infection or of deteriorating health of the surrounding scales.

The problem is, he has had this for a month and it hasn't gotten any better either.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

thanks in advance--

more info

Other than that he's fine. No real change in normal mating behavior

-- This time around he never really lost quite as much of his appetite and still eats like it's going out of style. He makes a great show of despising whatever food he's given, but once he's pranced around the room a few times on his toes and reclaimed his food dish by bobbing his head over it for five minutes he pretty much eats the majority of what's in his dish. So he is eating less, but not by much. Helps to add kiwi I guess.

-He has decided, as in previous years, to un-potty-train himself during mating season, and no longer waits for his bathtime, or waits untill five minutes after he returns from his bath to completely trash his enclosure and smear crap all over the walls. Thus, the need for constant cleaning and the anti-bacterial anti-fungal treatments.

So, from what I can see, behavior is normal-- He doesn't appear to be bothered too much by his injury, and doesn't react when the anti-fungal anti-bac treatments are applied. Even so, I'd feel alot better if it healed over for good.

I'm going through the same thing right now. My 11 month old ig Bamboo hit his mouth right in the front about six weeks ago. I would clean it daily and put neosporin on it to help it heal. It was working until he came into season. Ever since then he freaks out in a major way whenever I go to pick him up to put him in the tub; and, thats how he injured it again. He hit his mouth in the same place and it ended up splitting his lip even more. So, I kept cleaning it but it just didn't look like it would heal. So, about a week ago I ended up taking him to a really good herp vet. They gave him some Nolvassan Scrub (to clean his mouth 2x a day). And he also has a Fortaz Injection (a medicine that I have to inject into his arm every 3 days). Although I hate having to give him shots, it's almost completely healed. I'm not sure how bad it is for your guy; but, if it doesn't look like it's getting better don'tn take any chances. Good luck!
