EGGS! and a ?

lbrat Jul 02, 2003 03:09 PM

Came home from work today to find that my amel. blackrat had layed 9 eggs.I put them in a plastic container on perlite with a lid and a few very small holes in the lid.The egg container had been in the hova-bator for 1-1/2 weeks and stabalized at 82-83 degrees. My question is-will ambient light entering the room affect the eggs in any way?How about the light in the room?should I keep it off? The egg container has no moisture collecting on the underside of the lid.Should I plug the holes in the lid?Any advice would be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

The key thing for me has always been to limit the dampness of the substrate while maintaining a moderately high 70-80% relative humidity.

If you start off drier and add water if you notice any dimpling, you should be fine. If you start out too wet and start a mold colony, it's harder to dry it out without affecting the eggs.

Light, unless it affects temperature, has not affected our incubation in any way.

The tone of your question indicates that this is a new experience for you. Enjoy it! Don't neglect things, of course, but you can 'kill with kindness' by overanalyzing too. I applaud you for asking advice.

Congrats!

Yes,eggs are a first for me.I have bred rosy boas a few times and that of coarse is different, mom does all the work
Is there a time period when the eggs could be candled for blood vessels or would I be able to see them now?And thanks for your response Manny.
