Many, many years ago when I got my first snake, there weren't a whole lot of snake experts or all the resources that there are today to get information (and I was a teenager who probably wouldn't have listened anyway). Anyway, I got my ball python and always had it with me (she'd curl up in my hair and hang there all day). I also had dogs, cats, birds, rabbits. The thought never occured to me that their smell might disturb (for lack of a better word) my snake. Occasionally when I had the sanke out, I'd find a cat or dog poking it's nose at her. But no one ever got hurt, the snake didn't appear scared or threatened or hungry for that matter. More oblivious if anything. Whether it was dumb luck that nothing happened or that the snake was eventually trained that these other creatures weren't food or a threat, I couldn't really tell you. I'd venture that it was a little bit of both. I guess that doesn't really answer your question but I thought I'd share the story.
