4ft deep cage question

jasonmattes Dec 13, 2004 03:03 AM

I am giong to build an 8ft cage for my burm but cant decide whether it should be 3ft deep or 4ft. 3ft wastes some material but 4ft is an awfull big reach trying to get out a big snake....what do you think.....i am kinda leaning towards 3ft just because it will be difficult to get a burm out of the cage if she is in the back but 4ft would cost the same and give her more room which i am sure she would like....i have plenty of room for either size so that is not an issue

IMHO 4 ft is rediculous unless its a walk in enclosure .

3ft is pushing it also IMHO i have kept 18 ft burms in a 6x2 cage and they were more then comfy . How often do you see a large burm out running ? lol 90% of the time they are coiled up or only really use a cage when there working up a good poop i would say 24 - 30 is plenty deep for you and you can clean it without climbing in thecage with the snake aswell.

four feet is a little overkill. I kept mine in a 8x3 and he used it all. He was more active than what i've heard from other burm owners. It will all depend on how you want to handle your burm and the cleaning chores. I foound it was easy for me to climb in and clean rather than reach. Mine was also very tall which didn't need to be. So if tall is where you're going than go deep if not go thin. Again it all depends on how you are going to handle the every day stuff.

Its going to be 2ft tall...I am going to make it at least 3ft deep but i was only considering making it 4ft because it will not cost anymore money and i have plenty of room for it...

Thanks for the input

If you have the room, use it. My burm is nearing 18 ft and her enclosure is 8'x4'x30". And yes most of the time she's curled up under the hot side, but on occasion she's on the other side.

On top of her is a 4' water monitor, and on top of him is a 4' iggy. I'm doing some renos right now, but when I get it put back together I'll post some pics.

It would also be easier to use full sheets of plywood instead of having to cut them.

Just my opinion.

how is your cage when it comes to cleaning and trying to get the snake out??

latimer Dec 17, 2004 02:22 PM

Very easy. My burm is very docile and cooperative...though she has her stuborn moments! The front is 1/4" sliding glass. As soon as I slide it open, she's happy to come out.

I use a short handle snow shovel (Its made to go in the trunk of a car) to clear out all the substrate. I then use a shop vac to clean what I miss shovelling. Then I throw in some fresh substrate and she's all smiles...well, you know what I mean.

Every so often (it varies) I spray it down with a water-bleach solution with one of those pump sprayers for insecticides/herbicides/fertilizer (just be sure its a new one thats never been used-10$ at walmart). Then I have a second one that I use only water in to rinse everything. If I have to do some scrubbing I just crawl halfway in and go to work and I'm not a small guy! (Training for strongman competion).

The enclosure she was in before this one was 8x3 and that would have been fine, but I needed extra space for the upper two cages and it was just easier to go with 4'. I think she enjoys the extra space.

When I built this enclosure I made it so it comes apart in sections. This is so I can easily move it if I move and I can also extend the length. Again, not so much for the burm but for the iggy and especially the water.

If you (or anyone) can tell me how to post a picture, I can show you the new enclosure before the current reno, partial pics of the old enclose and when I'm done I can show you the finished product.

Hope this helps!

i would love to see a pic. If you upload a pic to the photo gallery here on ks you can select the pic when you post a message and it inserts it automatically....
I like the shovel idea....
thanks for the reply
