So cute, Anna is being insubordinate

CollardGuy Dec 13, 2004 12:33 PM

I opened the lid of her brumation tote and lifted the cave up and she just sat there with her mouth open a little. Chico is eating lots, his legs are getting a bit thicker. Man I gotta tell everyone, if you have a chance to breed Field crickets, take it! I have about 150 in a little tote that have been forgotten for a week without new food or water, (because they are king of under an insulation cave, I forgot they were there.) And they are kept cooler that the European crickets, and none died! There just hanging around, wondering what to do. They don't have the slightest notion to eat each other. European crickets die so fast! I don't know what to do.

Scott, where did you get your field crickets? I have some in the yard during the warmer months, but it would be hard to catch enough by hand to get a whole colony going.

Hey elan,

Here's how I go about finding Field Crickets. I'll try to be general, as I don't know where you live, or what kind of habitat surrounds you. You have a good chance of finding adults from about April to November. You can find younger individuals during the latter part of the warm season also. If you look during the day, look under things like rocks/logs/boards/trash, you get the idea. The key for good Cricket habitat is for the ground underneath a given board to be slightly moist. Other insects can also be found so you can be creative with what you catch and offer to your lizard. Beware of "higher" forms of life that may also reside underneath your debris, I have discovered many a scorpion, and a couple Rattlers in my time underneath the larger pieces. Anyway, you can also hunt at night with a good flashlight, as the crickets will be foraging and searching each other out. Just listen for the males, and you can bet a couple females will be close by. Be quick, because you won't often get a second chance. If you leave a light on at night, you can also gather other insects that appear there, all of which are relished by our Collared friends. One little disclaimer; make sure the areas you hunt are free of chemicals. I imagine that should go without saying though. They like to eat vegetables, and if neglected, each other, so think about that. All in all they aren't that hard to rear, and make excellent food for Collareds so its a win-win. I hope this helps you.

I caught almost all of them along the outside of our pool, (above ground) in the tall grass and under a couple pieces of clothing. They are SURVIVORS!

Thank you, Phil and Scott, for the tips on finding the crickets. I live in the southest, so they're pretty abundant in the spring and summer.

So, um... wanna share? LOL!
It's SO COLD here, and I'm really frustrated with the european crix... I can't wait till summer so I can try to find the black ones... maybe in the basement of this place...
Lately, I've been using Silk Worms, but Jimmie only eats a few, then gets frustrated with the silk hanging out of her mouth (I use them mainly for my recovering chameleon). She also won't touch mealworms any more... I so dread the thought of buying roaches...
Anyway, glad you caught enough for a colony. I'll have to try in the warmer months.

I ordered 100 about 2 or 3 weeks ago and they're almost all gone.
