Veild Cham questions

Dillon4203 Jul 02, 2003 03:53 PM

I have a male veiled that is about 10 inches total length, and a small female about 3 inches total length. Now will I ever be able to breed those two chameleons when they get older? Will anything happen to them? At a pet store by me they were trying to breed two chameleons i don't remember what kind, but after they were bred the male ate the female, or it was the other way around, but will this happen to my two veileds or willl I just have to take her out right after they are done mating

I've never heard of one cham eating a mate! Sounds like the shop had no idea what they were doing or they tried a female that was a mere baby. You should wait to breed the female until she's at least 8 months old (preferably a year to make sure she's fully developed and has good bone mass) and she's stopped growing. It won't hurt her NOT to breed despite what some outdated info says. Never keep 2 chams together or even within sight of each other and only introduce them when you want breeding. Some males are very rough, so watch them and remove the female if she shows she's not receptive. She will show dark extreme stress colors and won't tolerate the male. If she's not ready she's not ready or has some health problems that are adding to her stress level.
