Cage Building

otaku Dec 13, 2004 01:21 PM

Not sure if this is off-topic for this forum. But I am new here, and actually am also fairly new to herpetoculture. I've purchased and am caring for two poison dart frogs and I recently (last week) bought a young-looking Mali (maybe 5" long). I assume it's less than a year old...

In any event, I want to get her a larger cage (I am certain she will most likely outgrow the 20g long soon). I've looked around for large cages, but most that are commercially available (the very few there are) seem extremely expensive for what you are getting. And, looking at posts here, I've noticed many of you guys build your own cages (many of them very nice looking too, I might add).

So, to the meat of my post: I want to build my Mali a cage, but I'm not very mechanically inclined (my skills lie more on the computer than with tools), though I can handle basic tools well enough to build a computer desk from WalMart. What would I need to build a cage? Where would I go for plans or anything? Or are there cages available commercially that are more reasonably priced?

I know I can go with a rubbermaid tank as a low-cost solution, but I want a cage that "looks" good in my house. I also want one with a glass front for easier viewing. How difficult is it to build a cage like that? Is it simply a matter of getting the parts and gluing/nailing them together? Or is there more to it than that?

And, finally, what materials would be good for a Uromastyx cage? What should I watch out for (like any types of wood or adhesives that are irritating to the lizard)?

If anyone could help me, even just by pointing me to a good cage building web site, I'd really appreciate it!

Thank you!

I recently built a cage for my adult mali, getting your Uro out of its 20 long is definitley a good plan. I had never built anything from scratch before but found it to be quite easily. There is a cage building forum on Kingsnake that is super helpful. I am also including the scant web site I put together with the info regarding the cage I built. I had the wood cut at a mill (the standard home improvement center will not make exact enough cuts, but anyplace that makes cabinets, has a mill, or more local HICs can usually cut the wood for you). Having the wood cut basically created a "kit" I just had to glue and screw together. Figuring out the materials list was the hardest part, and I have included that on the attached site. The only adjustment I might make to the cage I built was not making it quite so tall, but I want it to be usable for my juvenile Egyptian later on, so I needed the extra height.

Feel free to ask lots of questions, I think the homemade tanks can look much nicer, though I am not sure they are much cheaper. At least you get exactly what you want for the money though!

Thanks for the info! I'm not looking for a dirt cheap cage, just something less than the $2-$3k cages I've come across in my searches...

I would say that that cage (plus the glass I don't have properly fitted in it yet) probably cost under $500. Possibly closer to $400 or less but I never went back and figured it out, and I KNOW I will never find the receipts again, lol.
