i just get a albino leopard gecko, i plan to keep it in a 2 feet tank. my first question is.. must the tank have a cover?.. it is ok to keep it without an cover?... secondly.. it is ok to use NatureBark by Four Paws as substrate? it is safe? also... i heard that i need to dust the crickets in calcium powder right? is it ok to use cuttlebone(calcium for birds) and crush them into powder and then use it as calcium powder? can some one please anwser my questions..thankyou..

As long as the gecko doesnt have anything to climb up onto that could enable it to escape you dont need a cover, but if you have cats or even a dog that could get in you need a cover.

No nature bark it will cause health problems the safest thing would be to use tiles or paper towls.

I dont know about the cuttle bone so i cant anser that.I just use the kind you buy at the pet store.

you dont need a top as long as you dont have anything that can get in(cat, dog). and aslong as theres nothing that will let it get to the top, they cant climb glass. bark is safer then most things, but i still wouldnt use it. if you want a natural look, go with clay tiles form home depot. there about $1, mayb a lil more. and the cuddle bone is deff not good. go with rep-cal, or tetra fauna. it has to have vit D3, even if you have a UV light on them. any other questions?

I have to disagree with the cuttlebone not being good. If it is ground up in a blender to a powder, it should be fine. It is just pure calcium, no harm in it. But I wouldnt soley substitue your leo with that.

then your not disagreeing that much, when i said its not good enough. i ment it that way because they dont have D3 in them so it would really be pointless. didnt mean it would hurt them, it just wouldnt be good enough. guess i should have specified

Buying some cuttlebone and then crushing it into a fine powder seems like a pain in the ass, when you can get a little jar of calcium at a pet store for about $3-$5. It's not like they eat an ounce of it a day.
The tiles I got at Lowe's were $0.88 a piece.
See it don't look too bad.

i DON'T reccomend cuttle bone simply because when I was in metal smithing and we were coing casting our teacher talked about using cuttlebone as a casting agent. To me that reads anything that can hard and hold hot liquid metal doesn't seem to fit in a sensitive little stomache like a leo

gurnham4 Dec 14, 2004 11:36 AM

tiles make very nice set-ups, look at tims and mine

dragonfruit_85 Dec 14, 2004 09:50 PM

Hey thats cool if you dont use it. I was just giving my opinion. For every topic there is always going to be a pro and a con. I honestly dont use it either, but I used to and Sobe never touched it. I also think it would be okay to use because you grind it into such a fine powder, plus they dont eat a whole lot of it anyway. Its your leo, do what you think is best for him/her. Hope there were no hard feelings.

sorry, but you cant just say do whats best. if you ask some members that have been here a lil while, theyll tell you how i went off on this kid cause he unsisted on doing everything wrong, cause he thought it was right. and if it were not for me flipping on it, hes gecko would deff be dead. this isnt an argument, but have you noticed how fine calcium dust is? its called dust. very very fine, it would be so much easyer to just go pay 3.99 for a bottle of calci dust. dont you think?
