I lower my night temperature to the upper 60's and keep my daytime high in low 80's. I do this 5-6 weeks. I think photoperiod variance is an underated technique...I also let the humidity drop during those 6 weeks and raise it back to normal levels as I warm them....BTW I still feed the animals during this time if they will accept it...I just keep the meals small and few between.
Good luck, Chris O

Nevin,
I think the temps are more important than the photoperiod. I don't use lights in or on top of the cages so the actual photoperiod stays basically the same summer and winter due to the fact that my snakes are in a main room that I spend most of my waking hours in. There is some variance due to seasonal changes because there is a window in that same room which creates a "natural shift" in light, however when I am at home I turn on an overhead light that creates a photoperiod for the snakes. I go to bed (turn off the light) basically the same time every day summer and winter. It may vary an hour a day but basically for the purpose of photoperiod it stays the same.
I have only had 2 litters so I'm new too! I wish you the best of luck.

I've been talking to more and more people who take thier BRB's down to the mid-high 60's at night to cool them. In Ross' book, it says to avoid these temps as they may cause problems. I've never gone this cool for this reason. A DTH of 82 and NTL of 72-74 is the lowest I've ever gone. This year I'm pushing it to 70. What do you all think? What is the lowest you have taken your animals?

Nevin,
...There is disagreement about the subject of cooling and photoperiod for BRB breeding. Some people report success breeding BRBs without actively cooling them. It may be that with seasonal changes their cages get cooler even though they do not turn down their thermostats. I cool mine. I turned off the cage heaters 2 weeks ago. The weather has varied here and so they have mostly had temps in their cages in the high 60s and low 70s. I want them down to the mid 60s at least some nights while I am cooling them. The weather just turned colder and I took temps this morning and found all the adult Rainbows at 63 and so turned the house heat up a little. I think they should be watched very closely when cooling. Any sign of a problem with one and I move it to a warmer cage. I think the photoperiod is important. I try to let the light coming through the window be the primary lighting they are subjected too. I try to not have the overhead room light on too much at night. I often check on them with a flashlight rather than turning on the room light.
Good luck and of course your mileage may vary,
Jeff

thanks alot for the answers. the problem is the lowest i can get it to drop if im lucky is absolute lowest is 70, because all my heat tape and lights keep my room between 70 and 75 degrees. hope thats low enough.
