Question about Redfoot tortoise

shorty333 Jul 02, 2003 04:04 PM

I just got my redfoot tortoise about a week ago. I've been feeding it different kinds of lettuce like baby greens and romaine and occasionally given him fruit. Is this a good diet? Is there anything else that you suggest? Thanks.

If you go to the Tortoise Trust website (www.tortoisetrust.org)
and in the 'articles' sections, you will find an excellent
article on Redfoot and Yellowfoot diets as well as one on
diet management in general (Avoiding dietary disasters) and
on vitamins and minerals as well as a new one on calcium
supplements.
You might find a lot of the articles on that website helpful
actually, if you are new to Redfoots or tortoises in general.
Hope that helps,
Gaby

I also have a red foot tortoise. You can feed them a variety of foods. You also could feed them other vegies like squash, carrots, collard greens, turnip greens, mustard greens, and kale. They also seem to like apples and other fruits alot too. I also have him a pothos vine and some other harmless live plants growing in his cage for him to eat off of whenever he wants. All and all, it is important to feed red foots a variety of foods.

Just for your information. The 'harmlessness' of pothos is very
controversial. I would avoid it just to be on the safe side.

that pothos is not toxic, but it's sap can be irritating to skin and mouth, but many animals don't have a problem with it. but just to be safe...you might remove it. i too had one with my redfoot and he ate some occasionally but i have since removed it.
