Anaconda Worms, Confirmation!

ben_renick Dec 13, 2004 05:11 PM

I just want to make sure that these are worms. It kinda bothers me, because these are the anacondas I tried to save, and I did de-worm them, how are the worms coming back?

I can't remember the name exactly it's been so long since I've been up there... It was through a suringe, about a 1/2 a suringe for the Green, once at the vet and once again 2 weeks later, and 1/4 for the yellow anaconda, there and 2 weeks later.

This is by far the most effective treatment for tapes when dosed at 6 to 8 mg/kg with a second dose 2 weeks later. The key in my opinion, to it's most efficient use, is to give it orally in pill form. It does not seem to work as well in snakes when given as an injection. This is most easily accomplished by placing the dose in the smallest feeder animal the snake will eat. You may need to have the pill cut with a razor to give the proper dose. Did your vet give the diagnosis of tapes? That is what appears to be in your photo. Other than tapeworm, Droncit is somewhat effective on flukes, but will not take out other worm parasites such as nematodes. Good luck.

Yeah, pretty sure that was it. And I can understand why it would be better in pill form, not all the medicine gets in the snake, because either it will spit it back out or it just doesn't get down all the way. No, there was no diagnosis of worms in either snake, they were in so bad of shape, we decided to make sure and go out and give them the medicine. So whenever you stick it in a feeder, how would you stick in the feeder?

I just make a small slice in the skin on the neck of the thawed or fresh killed feeder just large enough to allow the pill to be worked up under the skin.
