Houston...Good news. His color looks great! His legs and body are now the prettiest I have ever seen on him.

momto6 Dec 13, 2004 06:34 PM

He's legs and parts of his body are a beautiful blue green color. He doesn't have much yellow on his head though. He's still really skinny but he's getting very active. I threw a cricket in there just to see what he would do and he jumped at it and licked it. It had the calcium powder on it. Guess he didn't want to eat it though because he just left it alone. Son is still giving him dog food. He doesn't act real crazy about eating but son is patient and manages to get some in. He does seem to want to drink a lot. More than I thought he would.

I bought him a slimline light fixture with super UV Lamp (that's what it says on the box) Produces 3% UVB and 7% UVA. I went to 3 pet stores and this was the only one that I found. It says T-8 Fluorescent lamp included. Whatever it is it seems to be working.

Sorry to take so long to update but as you see I am a mom to 6 plus one boxer, one turtle, 3 fish, 9 chickens and one soon to be healthy lizard thanks to all the people that gave us terrific advice!

He is a very tame lizard. He has only biten a couple of times and I believe both times was when son was giving him a cricket by hand (before he got skinny). He was snapping at the cricket.

He's eating the dog food, I didn't get the baby food although I do plan too. At least he's eating the dog food for now.

What about egg yolks (cooked)? Would that be a good protein for him?

Sounds like you two got him help in time!! I'm so glad, we need pictures of this guy!

Not sure what to say about the egg yolks. Never even heard of it before.

But AWESOME job with Houston, I'm so so glad, I can't emphasize that enough. How old is your son? You and him are making a good team

I have never tried eggs with collareds, so I don't know whether I'd recommend it or not. He's probably going to be fine with what you're giving him right now.

I am very excited to hear about Houston's progress. I think many of us have a personal interest in seeing him thrive. He is one lucky lizard to have such dedicated people looking out for his welfare. It makes me feel good knowing that you're doing everything you can to make him healthy and that's he's responding so quickly. It sounds like a real success story in the making!

Don't forget to post pictures when you have a chance. I'd love to see his progress.

Great job on getting him on the road to good health!

That fixture sounds like the same one I have. Make sure you remove the plastic shield covering the bulb, as per the instructions. I replaced the bulb with a Repti-sun one, though. Much better bulb according to numerous sources. As I posted in your earlier thread, you can order them for only $15.99. Again, be sure your lizard is within 12". Closer for the bulb you have, as some of the more inexpensive ones have been documented to have their UVB output dissipated at only 3"!

Regarding crickets... my lizards sometimes lick and balk at crickets if they have calcium powder on them. Try throwing in some undusted ones for now. You need to get him used to eating live food right now. You can worry about calcium once he is back on live food. One step at a time!

I forgot about Cinnamon (the hampster) wouldn't want to hurt her feelings.

My son is a teenager...he's 15. We homeschool and he just wasn't taking the time to care for the lizard as well as he should. He did tell me that he needed a certain light when we first got him and we thought we had gotten what we needed from the Pet Store. Since then we have learned from experience and a wonderful source (here) NOT to trust the petstore peoeple.

The lizard calcium that I have is ReptoCal Includes Calcium and Vitamin D3 It has:

minimum calcium 27%
max calcium 36%
min phosphorus 6%
min postasium .03%
min min sodium .03%
min chloride .2%

So does that sound like the right stuff?

Lens is off of the light.

there are two calciums out there. one has a 2:1 ratio of calcium to phosphorous and the other a 2:0. since collareds eat bugs, they really need the 2:0 so that they don't get too much phos in their diet. i used to use the calcium you are talking about and my vet told me to switch. i now use t-rex's 2:0.

I use RepCal calcium and Herptitive vitamins (Both ZooMed) in a 1:1 combination. I also have a recovering one. (Chico) He was accually skinny when I caught him and didn't eat hardly anything during the summer. (outside, so good UVB exposure) This is what I did: Parazap for two weeks, then a couple days with the light off. His appitite (or will to live) came right back. I am currently stuffing him with waxworms and dusted crickets. Also after the Parazap I put his old freind Anna (from outside during the summer, now she's hibernating) in with him for a couple weeks. I just thought I would note that cause' some people say a buddy helps.
