So instead of puting the humidifier in the cage, i should put it outside the cage, put a pvc pipe over the opening, and let the hunidity just float over the top of the cham cage(which i hope will eventually fall as it cools)?

umm i guess you could put it in the cage if you wanted to...i just thought it would be easier to get to and fill up with water if it was on the outside. i have mine piped to where it comes in at the top of the cage and it just drifts down. my chams really enjoy sittin there in the mist it puts out. it works really good for me.
I think the little personal ones will need filling very often if your indoor air is dry from heating. The Holmes look fine. One with about a 2 gal reservoir seems to be a nice size. The water won't sit in the tank so long it gets bad, but you won't be filling the thing every day either. The fancier types aren't necessary and obviously the ones with fancy lights won't work either. You will need to de-mineralize and clean the unit often, so the simpler models with a minimum of tubes or parts are better. I tried putting one inside a large cage and had problems. The very high humidity levels corroded the humidifier internally and it had a short life. Models with a removable directional spout can be fitted with pvc or plastic tubing so you can direct the fog wherever you want through the cage wall or down from the top. You can get a multiple setting timer to create cycles of fogging and drying to fit your house climate.
Hi Carlton, yes the small ones are not ones you can walk away from and leave on all day - though there have been times I have come back and heard a whirring motor and no mist!. I take mine out every other day to clean anyway but run them about 2-3 hours/day on low setting. It is quite helpful, but I should add that it needs to be placed about 1/2 - 2/3 up from the floor or the mist will remain low. I just swap it off the extra plant stand I have in there - summer = plant, winter = humidifier. lol!

unless you have a HUGE cage you will not be able to put one of full size in the cage. I use the small personal one by Sunbeam (see link). They are about $15-$20 and can be found at drugstores (Walgreen's etc.), K-mart, etc. I also use a larger Sunbeam outside the cage. This time of year the smaller ones get used often (I have 2 and switch back and forth so they can be thoroughly cleaned and allowed to air dry b/t uses).
Regardless of which you use be sure to clean it regularly. A tip: find one with a large enough opening so you can get you hand in to clean (on the big ones, not the small).
hope this helps
