The mystery is solved!

caecilianman02 Dec 13, 2004 08:48 PM

Hi there;

Guess what? He was searching for something to eat, but whenever it was put in front of him, he'd flee. Why? It wasn't until I noticed the bluish tint in his eyes, and the very milky dull stomach, that I realized he is shedding. That also explains why that skin was peeling from his head when he arrived. I am waiting at least 3 weeks before I offer food again. Hopefully by then he will have shed and will be used to his new surroundings.
I leave for Cleveland on Friday, and hopefully I will return with a female of this amazing species! If they breed, I could eventually make corn snake-tame SKs, and then people would stop having to catch them from the wild! But bad news for all of you morph and hybrid lovers; I am breeding only pure SK bloodlines!

Why are you going to wait 3 weeks before trying to feed it again!?!? You should let the snake pack into a small plastic container filled with moist moss on the warm side of the enclosure, to build up lots of humidity to ease shedding(I'm doing that right now with my pine woods snake). After it does a complete shed, 3 or 4 days afterwards, offer it food. If it doesn't eat then, you may want to reconsider the diet you are offering it.

My snakes will take food the day they complete a shed, and if they missed a feeding while in shed, they are usually active until fed.

Try feeding it once the shed is complete. If it doesnt eat, then it is either not hungry or it does not want the food item offered.

SK are a very picky snake when it comes to food, and some are easily stressed. Not a snake for a novice, thats for sure.

Good luck
