Bed O Beast

pebblelu Dec 13, 2004 09:31 PM

I'm going to be getting my first corn snake and i've read that aspen or cypress mulch are good bedding, but I was wondering about bed o beast. Thats what i'd like but want to make sure that that kind would be alright.
One more question that might sound a little stupid but haven't read about this any where. Your soppose to feed your snake in a differnt container, than your not soppose to handle the for 24 to 48 hrs, so do you leave them in the food container or put them back. I hope that made scents. Thanks

As far as feeding in a different cage you will want to put them back in there regular cage when they can get warm again. You just do not want to handle them alot after they just ate. Hope this helps

Bed-a-beast is fine - I use it for almost all my herps. And you don't have to feed your snake in a separate container unless you are using a loose substrate, but you can feed on bed-a-beast.

I agree with not feeding the snake in a seperate container. I know the theory is if you feed him in a 2nd container then everytime you open his regular he won't think it is time to eat. I have never had a problem with this, I do howver take my snakes out and handle them, and clean up the cage between feedings. I feel like it stresses the snke even more to keep moving it around from container to containerespecially while feeding it.

if you only opened your snakes cage to feed them then I could see where they'd learn to associate your hands with food. But I would hope that we also go into their cage to change water, spot clean, etc and handle them. So then that means they're not going to learn to associate you with food. Again, I'd only worry about feeding in a separate container if they are on a loose substrate that they can injest and cause problems.

I feed my baby in the deli cup she came in, as that's what she was used to before she got to me. I'd ask whoever you get your snake from how they've been feeding it, and continue to do that for at least a little while.
