THE BABIES ARENT GROWING!!

rockheretic Dec 13, 2004 10:19 PM

Hello all,
I have a problem. I have 2 uros one is app. 6 inches the other 4.5 inches I have had them since march and the female has only shed once. So it was determined that they had worms. Now the worms are gone and have been for about 2 1/2 weeks. I am worried that they arent growing and dont know what to do. I feed them green and veggies and once in a great while a worm. I just dont know what to do to make them grow. I also tried soaking them (which didnt help) ANYONE PLEASE HELP MY BABIES GROW!

now that the worms are gone it should help them grow faster since they are getting all the nutrients and not sharing them with the parasites
just keep feeding them like you are. are they pretty good eaters? i know having bugs can decrease their appetites so it may take a couple weeks to get them eating properly.
peas and fresh soy beans were recommended to me when my rescued mali was underweight from abuse and parasites.
i have never had a baby but from what i understand uros are not fast growers.
i hope they do better for ya and let us know how they progress

I would agree with Vonnie,

Many people believe more protein will help them grow faster, but it may also compromise their health later in life. It sounds like you are doing all teh right things, make sure they are getting their vitamin and calcium supplements, and are exposed to UVB lights. Uros are very slow growers. It took mine over 6 years to reach his "adult length". Not animals for the impatient, lol.

They are lucky to have a "parent" that cares so much about them!

You didn't say if you were tracking weights with a digital gram scale. I personally have a hard time telling by eye if my uro is growing but by tracking weights weekly with a scale I know what is going on. Plus you get an early indicator of health problems if weights start to drop.

If you don't have a scale another option is taking them to the vet to be weighed. If you bring your animals in for checkups and treatment, vet offices usually will let you bring your animal in to be weighed for no charge. As long as your uros are not stressed and not eating well a monthly trip to the vet to be weighed shouldn't be too stressful.
