I messed up......

BillyBoy Dec 14, 2004 07:00 AM

My new red-multi female puked yesterday. She's every bit of 5 feet and I figured she would have no problems with a small rat (my male who is about the same size eats one every 10 days or so), so that's what I fed her last Wednesday. I started getting a little nervous when she still had a lump two days later - in my experience, that's almost always a sign of too big a meal with these guys. Anyway, only about half of it was digested when it came back up, so no food and lots of mistings for the next two weeks while her gut recovers. Next meal will be a rat pinky. I'll let everyone know how she does. Just goes to show even with 30 years experience, we can all still make mistakes. The other two new ones are doing great and the little blackie has already defecated so he will get another meal tonight. Billy

Best of luck. I'm sure you've got it under control.

what was the ambient temps?

BillyBoy Dec 14, 2004 11:56 AM

Temps are fine with ntl's down around 73 and dth's around 85, humidity ranging around 60-70% with spikes after misting. It's simply a matter of feeding a relatively fresh import a food item that was too big. I should have known better......

just wanted to make sure you weren't keeping him too hot but you obviously know the rules.....its always fun to see a new snake accept food eagerly and "chill out" with a big lump in its belly....but I guess with imports its like feeding those starving kids in Africa, start them off with a normal sized American meal and you might kill them...

Good Luck, with your new Female Billy ! She should be OK, after a couple of week's with no food to get her system back on track ! Then small meal's every 7 Day's for awhile. Take Care !

Unfortunately, I've gone through this before so I know that patience and discipline are the keys to get her back on track. The only change in plan will be only feeding after a good defecation whether that's 5 days or 15 days. It's always worked for me in the past, so I'm confident she'll be fine. She has a terrific feeding response and good body weight, so even if I stretch her out to 21 days, she should be just fine. I just feel bad I screwed up and she has to suffer for it now. Billy
