Brumation questions

shaon94 Dec 14, 2004 09:03 AM

I know you all probably get a hundred questions about this during the winter months but I can not find exactly what I am looking for in the current post. Amber went into brumation about 1 month ago now. Every now and then she wakes up and come out to bask and even eat sometimes. Now that last part is my problem. She has eaten about twice now, but has not pooped at all. I tried a warm bath and all that seems to have accomplished is scared the living heck out of her she was running around trying to dig her way through the wood backing and glass sides until she calmed down and went back into her log. (she has not come out since).

Should I be worried about her not pooping? I had a fecal test done (just by chance) about 2 weeks before she went into brumation and she had low levels of coccidia but nothing to worry about (according to the vet, we treated her to keep levels low). Her color is phenomenal (probably the best I have seen her) but I worry especially about the not pooping. If the food just sits in her stomach will it rot? Or is she storing it to keep up her weight. This is in her first year of life as well so I have heard that normally they do not go into brumation of course there are always exceptions and I have heard there is nothing I can do about the fact she wants to do it. Any help is appreciated.

First off, quit feeding her. They don't need to eat while brumating. You can leave a dish of water in just in case she wakes up and is thirsty. Also turn the lights off, that could be why she keeps getting up and interupting her sleep.
