Permits?

rich-k Dec 14, 2004 09:40 AM

Hello all,
I purchased my burm from a small local pet shop and with the animal I received a temporary permit and was advised that I needed to send away for a permanent permit. I was told the cost is about $5 and it was not problem. I never did go through with it for no particular reason.

My question is do I need this "permit"? Do most of you guys and girls have permits? I have been getting some informal requests to show off/inform about my herps at schools. I am a middle school teacher and work at an after school program also. What credentials do I need to do that? Any info on this would be appreciated.

Thanks

I would say, yes, you should get one. First of all, it sounds as if it is legally required where you are. Secondly, it will set a good example to others, where it could (hopefully) deter someone who might not be a suitable owner (ie, some kid who thinks it's just cool to get a burm, even though he can't care for it - the permitting process might just disuade him - if s/he were so inclined to oblige the law of course).

I don't have a permit, but then, I am not legally required to have one. I would say that $5 is a small price to pay for a permit though.

Yea I have no problem getting the permit but I'm worried that if there ever comes a time when they are going to registered addresses of "dangerous animal" keepers and siezing their snakes I do not want to part with my big boy you know. I guess I will get 1 though for good measure, especially if I plan to take him out to schools.

Thanks for the input

NJ Fish Game & Wildlife requires a permit for all pythons. One permit will cover all your animals, and it was $10 annually a few years back when I still kept burms( just boas now). Its a very easy process, just a mail in form, and the people there were always pleasant to deal with. If you need contact info for them let me know and I'll see if i still have a copy.

Good Luck
Brian
