CareFresh bedding for baby Beardies???

abstractcypher Jul 02, 2003 04:52 PM

WhatUp everyone... I just got two beautiful babies and I have them on what I have my ohter two one, CareFresh. I've been watching them to see if they start to think it's food, and i've had no problems as of yet. What do you think? And has anybody out there ever used CareFresh with their baby Beardies? Thanks...

Raymond

what that is, but best thing in my opinion is to keep them on a non particulate substrate until 10-12 inches..best to be safe

Not sure if that's the best substrate to use for dragons... i doubt very seriously that it would be outright harmful to them... all it is, is ground up newspaper into a pulp and then baked... but from what I remember it's not very fine...

I would think they babies would have somewhat of a hard time finding crickets in there and walking on it might be a little difficult at times for them. The biggest concern I think would be them trying to find the food.

Best to maybe keep them on white paper towels or paper until they are a lil older I think... but that's just my opinion. If it works for you great, let me know. I used to use CareFresh for my snakes, but I don't think it's gonna work great for dragons.

let me know,

Carefresh is commonly used as a substrate or litter for rodents. It's part of the pulp making process that can't be used to make paper. It really looks like uneven shaped pellets of dried pulp. It's very absorbant of moisture and odours. Kind of expensive to use as a substrate though I would think. I don't think it would be good for dragons mostly due to the fact they probably have a hard time staying on top of it.

I wuold keep babies on paper towel or newsprint and maybe try adults on this stuff instead.

I would think it would be fine. Paper is pretty digestable. Watch him eat, if he doens't get much, I would think it should be fine. But if he gets a lot, I would put him on something else. Most of the time they spit out whatever went along with the cricket, at least my lizards do, I'm not sure if it's the same for all beardies.

One thing you may want to watch for is respitory problems or eye problems. Regular carefresh is dusty and the beardies breeth it in and it can get in their eyes causing an infection. They have a new carefresh ultra that is supposed to be dust free, and safe for reptiles. Just my two cents.

peace,
