Can snakes, dogs and cats be friends?

britbiker Dec 14, 2004 02:19 PM

When I adopted my beardies the gentleman told me it's best to keep their cage in a room away from a pet dog or cat. I posted this on the Bearded Dragon page, and a bunch of people replied, many with photos, saying their cat or dog got along fine with the beardies. Several attached photos of their cat snuggling with a beardie, or else a beardie sitting next to an apparently unconcerned dog.
Question: has anyone ever had a similar experience with any kind of snake? That is, a snake that wasn't afraid of a dog or a cat and/or a dog or a cat that really didn't mind a snake? Especially to the point that the snake could crawl around, or simply lie coiled up, and not be bothered by the furry animal?
Strange things happen.
Thanks. Curious minds want to know!

The people that leave their beardies out with their dogs are non to bright in my opinion. It only takes one time for a dog to get mad, for that beardie to end up dead. I stick to the sayign that you should keep herps, and dogs/cats away from each other. It simply isn't worth the danger to the animals.

` Friends? I wouldn't trust them with that emotion. Some large Boids lose their fear of most things. Some cats and dogs get comfortable around snakes. With a hand raised tame Boid, and a cat, I'd be more worried about the cat harming the snake, and provoking it into defense. Finding out can result in scarred, injured, traumatized, and dead pets.
` If I had a baby Boid who got along with the cat, and a cat that didn't mind, I might let them together from time to time, but under obsessive supervision, only.
` These two have been doing this since the Boa was an 18 inch baby, almost 6 years, now. The cat is actually jealous of the attention the snake gets. He jumps up and demands equal time. This particular Boa is the most mellow Boid I've known, in 40 years.
` I recommend that you don't try this. It is a neat picture, though.

i have dogs and cats and when i have my snakes out i kick the cats out of the room. i don't want to take a chance on the cats hurting my snakes. i have 5. 4 of them are around 3foot and under. my python is 6 foot. they have on occasion come nose to nose with each other.

At first glance I thought it was eating your cat lol

Simply put, the answer is no, but there are animals that do like companionship. I've seen Tegu's and Dog's get along, but thats the first time I've ever seen a snake like anything else except for food.

Nice Yellow Anaconda too, very pretty, and suprisingly well behaved.

` First, you've got to give up the idea that they are all the same. They are all individuals, and their behavior has a wide range. I'm speaking of all Boids. It's like the conviction that some group of people are all the same. It just doesn't work, with humans, or Boids.
` He gets along with all sorts of critters. Just remember, if you put the wrong ones together, they will kill each other. So, DON'T. To get this type of behavior, you've got to start with them as newborn babies.
