Prolific?

bloodsss Dec 14, 2004 02:55 PM

Hi,

I'm a European Uro kepper/breeder and I was wondering what the more prolific Uro species are. My satanics and fimbriatus only lay 3-4 clutches a year... What's the going price for CB animals in the US?

Thanks in advance,
Bloodsss

well it really just depends. with all of the cites actions recently people are really trying to screw the buyers over. wc satanics sell at 35-100 dollars and some people are attempting to get 200 plus for satanics.
the most reasonable prices for cb satanics stay under 200 dollars and are usually 125-150 from what i've seen.
everything else seems to be the same way, very cheap for wc if you find the right dealer, and medium priced, and then outrageously priced from the people who are just trying to screw the buyers. there really aren't too many cb uroplatus in the us, and if they are they're being traded from breeder to breeder in attempts to get varied bloodlines.

And which species are the most prolific?

Henkeli, sikorae, phantasticus and ebanaui might not be the most prolific as far as number of eggs, but those are the most commonly hatched out- so they are the most prolific in captivity.

But let's say satanics, is it possible to get like 10 clutches a year? Or with other species?

i have dealt with satanics a little over a year now, and i wouldnt classify them as "prolific". they take a lot of work, and the most ive gotten so far is 2 clutches (although im sure there are others who have had better luck). telling from ad's ive seen in the classifieds here, i would say sikorae or henkeli are the most prolific. CB satanics and eban's only surface once in a blue moon.

I would say no. They seem to be relatively seasonal breeders. We do not specifically alter the environment to induce breeding, and I have heard doing this is not particularly effective, and they still only breed in the cool months, particularly October to January, which they lay roughly one clutch every 1-2 months. I have had them lay later, May, for example, but this is not common at all for our U. phantasticus. Please note ours are established, multiple-year captive animals, and most of the anomalies that I have seen are from animals having been captive less than 1 year.

I would say 4 clutches a year is about the most one can reasonably expect although I am sure more are possible, I dont think that is at all the norm.

CB prices depend heavily on the species.

Of course, guentheri are now made of gold... $1600 a pair in the classifieds here is quite possibly the most funny thing I have seen in a while. You cant even be assured they ARE guentheri, not 6 mos ago there was one originally listed for $200ish, then with CITES it went to $400... now they are worth $800 each? Ok. Someone else can have them for that price.

from what i have seen sikorae and henkeli have been the most common ones i've seen at shows that were CB. so i would guess those. But i haven't had much luck with my sikorae. all will breed readily i'm sure if their environment is perfect.
