Hog island, winter slowdown

Melle Dec 14, 2004 03:21 PM

Hello,

I have a hog island boa who is a year and a half old now and ive had him since he was a baby. I am assuming he is starting to slow down with feeding for the winter for the first time. So far, he hasnt eaten in about a month, and he used to eat one F/T small rat, sometimes 2, a week. So how long do they go during the colder months without food? how often should i try to feed him now? Thanks for any info

It is normal for some adult boas to slow down feeding in the winter.
My 3 year old male just went 2 months without feeding. He just ate a
large rat this past week.
What i do is i offer him a rat every 2 weeks. If he eats fine, if he dosn't eat that is fine too.
I feed my snakes frozen thawed so I throw out what he dosn't eat. I cry but he seems to be doing alright.
Good luck with him and by this spring he should be feeding back on schedule.

Good to know there are other people in the same boat - my almost 4 year old male (who I've had since April of this year) has also started refusing meals for the past couple of weeks, and he was a very reliable feeder. He seems to be ok as well, just doesn't have much interest in eating.

Good to know for next year! Til spring...
