First taste of each other

tequila Jul 02, 2003 05:08 PM

I plan on breeding our 2 corns next year, a ghost female and a jungle male (no specific project, just for experience, and the fact that they were our first 2 corns) anyway, i decided to finally let them take a gander at each other to see what their reactions would be to other snakes. everything was going well for the first 2 or 3 mins, they just checked each other out calm and cool, you could tell the curiosity in their eyes though when they first tasted one another! too cute i have to say.
then all of a sudden the female took off like a bullet right up and over the lip of the bin they were in! WOW i didn't know these things were so FAST! I laughed, and plan on letting them get used to each other someday, but i wanted to know of any first impressions your snakes have had when coming into contact with their first snake? do all of them take off? or do some not mind it?

Well a Jungle Corn is half kingsnake or so I understand, so when your corn female met him, she probably caught enough of the "kingsnake" in him to think, "goodness gracious me, if I don't scoot I'm going to be dinner" and away she zipped.

The first time I introduced my male and female cal kings, the female wanted nothing to do with the male, but he was hot to trot. Later They were both wandering restlessly, so I decided to take the tops off of both aquariums. The male immediately wandered over into the females cage, and well... we have 8 beautiful hatchlings, so you can guess what happeened after that.

I don't think that snakes need to "get to konw one another" before breeding, but I could be wrong.

thanks for the reply sash, i wish mine were mature this summer...i'm so envious of you guys and your eggs! i don't "need" them to get to know each other...it's just a curiosity thing, snakes loose their appeal if they just sit in a tupperware tub for 3 years....i like to add spice! breeding for instance...i can't wait! but pairing them up and seein their reactions is something i can't do with my kings so i just had to indulge! i just had them together again tonight after i posted this message, and they were great! little Ducati (jungle) was just chillin on top of his little wooden house i built, and Tiki (ghost) came right up and crawled right over top of em and he was just stunned, kinda like "how dare you".

You also mentioned that the jungle might have part king scent, but from what i've researched about them, they are actually corn in structure and genetics, with king influence. Little Ducati has a somewhat unique skull structure, sortof more cali-king shaped but long like a corn. anyway thanks! have fun!

Believe me, I know how you feel. I got my first cal kings as hatchlings, three of the prettiest snakes, and I knew that this year would be the first POSSIBLE year to breed them, not even knowing if they would be ready or not. I didn't exactly powerfeed them, but when you raise your own mice, well it's easy to feed them whenever they seem to be hungry! I was glad when two of my '01 snakes were ready to breed this year, and super excited when each laid eggs. Now I only have one more clutch to wait for.

Next year I'll possibly breed 2 female corns, 4 female cal kings, 1 blotched king, and 1 pyro. By the end of next year I expect my hair to go from brunette to white, and/or bald from premature graying or pulling it out trying to chat my mantra of "snakes take patience" over and over again.

It IS worth it when those little snakeys pop out of the eggs with their little tongue flicks and curiosity and such.
