A quick question...

beardielover13 Dec 14, 2004 05:21 PM

I was just reading my new Reptiles magazine and someone asked about inbreeding the dad to the daughter. I have no interest in doing this, but they said that it was ok. Is this true for bearded dragons? (it was originally for crested geckos). Any help would be nice. I was jsut wondering if the people that responded were nuts or if it was okay for just 1 generation or so. Thanks.

In other reptiles it's not as bad as with beardies. There's an old thought that it's ok for up to 7 generations with reptiles, I don't think this is right and won't do it but I've heard it over and over. Beardies had a very small population to begin with in the states and with Australia shutting down exports of new bloodlines they have been inbred beyond belief so I wouldn't chance any inbreeding if it can be avoided. Of course some line breeding still takes place, especially when new morphs are introduced but I'd avoid it if possible.
