I need HELP with the whole 'Gaping Mouth' thing PLEASE!!!

LinsCubb Dec 14, 2004 05:33 PM

I recently got a very pretty 'Beardie' and everything is going well. Just recently at one of my shows (I work for an exotic animal park, and we go to schools and events and etc.) she opened her mouth while sitting on her perch, and kept it open only for a few minutes. Now I understand that a lot of animals especially reptiles open their mouths to regulate body temperature, I realize this so when I got a reading from my temp gun it surprised me that she was only 90 degrees F. I checked multiple times and the same thing every time. So its not like she was hot at all. At the time though, there were some kids around her cage looking at her, but she has never done that before then. I also read that they communicate with the 'gaping mouth' as well. PLEASE some body help me to understand why she did this so I can change/help her.

PS Sorry for the long post.

Gaping while basking is very normal, like you said for temp control but I think they do it sometimes just because they want to. Was she bearded out also? If so the kids may have been stressing her out a bit.

It can mean several things but if the temps were 90 and the dragon doesn't have a cold then she is most likely saying to the kids " Keep your distance punks."
