Where could I buy a Horned Lizard?

Billbobjoefrank Dec 14, 2004 06:20 PM

Hello,

I have done my research, but before I construct a habitat I would like to find a place to actually buy them. Do any of you guys know were I could buy one or two HLs, I am not picky as to the specific species of HL either, but CB is obviously prefered to WC. A link or phone number would be very helpful to me. Do any of you sell them? Thanks.

Hi Drew,
You are not likely to find any for sale this time of year. They are all in hibernation. Mid summer to fall is the best time to try and find them. I strongly encourage you to get CB HL's. They will definitely be in better health and will adapt to your enclosure more quickly. Wild caught HL's are almost always poorly cared for, stressed, and near death when you get them. Best thing if you can't get CB's is to make a trip and capture them yourself.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Cable,

So,in the summer perhaps were could I look for HL's, I live in Colorado and know they live in SouthWestern Colorado(what kinds are there?), but what kind of area should I look for? Also do you or other people on this forum sell Hl's? Thanks.

Check your fish and game regulations. I know the Texas HL is protected there. Not sure about the short horn. I can't make a recommendation on buying WC HLs. I can't bring myself to support that. There may be some here who would sell you an HL or two. They'll have to contact you.
Winter is long for the HL enthusiast
But spring is just around the corner. What part of CO are you in? I might be able to help you find something.
If you are new to HL's I highly recommend Solare as they must be the easiest to care for and keep healthy. They are also less skittish as a species. Desert horned lizards are probably next and are much easier to purchase if you have to go that route.
You have the necessary equipment to care for them?
And you know you'll have to either catch or order ants?

Thanks Cable,

No I do not have the equipment, yet. I wanted to see if I could even find one first. The ants, I would get from the link you have on your site. I am about 20 minutes East of Denver. So do you periodically sell HLs, CB of course? Do any others sell them? Thanks for your time.

I am prohibited from selling the species I keep as they are all AZ natives (my state). I will be "gifting" some away at some point but I believe they are already spoken for.
There are others who do sell some CB HLs and I'm sure you could probably get one or two come spring. As I said the Solare or Platyrhinos will be the most likely candidates. I don't recommend the short horn as they can be more difficult.
Study up on the species you think you'll get. They all have their own requirements and preferences.

Thanks,

I was just wondering what makes SHL's more difficult then other HL species? More sesceptible to illness, etc. Also do you know of the requirements for SHL's?
