i have a green anole. it was green when my dad brought it home, but quickly turned brown. its cage is excellent. its an only animal. it does have a white dorsal strip. it loves mashed bananas and crickets. also, does having more green folliage, or green color at all affect the anoles coloration? thnx, nick.

The "white stripe test" is the most unreliable way to determine gender. Some males have them as well. If you can get a look at the underside of your Anole (like when it is on the glass side of the enclosure) look for two enlarged scales just behind the anal opening. If it has those, it is a male. Another indicator is to look at the base of the tail. There will be two bulges at the base of the tail on either side in a mature male. These are the male's sex organs, the hemipenes. If your Anole lacks both of these characteristics, it is a female. If it has either, it is a male.
Regarding color. It sometimes takes days or even weeks for an Anole to adapt to a new environment. Having a well-planted habitat helps becuase it provides hiding places and screens the Anole from outside distractions. Sometimes a background on three sides of the enclosure will help. Anoles can be very jumpy at times.
