UVB QUESTION

twilightfade212 Dec 14, 2004 07:14 PM

My kingsnake's cage is infront of a window. I plan on getting a UVB bulb and fixture for in the winter so he can get the UVB since there's not much sun in the winter, and to put a little heat into the tank. But in the spring and summer, will I need to use it daily since sunshine will be constantly streaming into the room and tank? Is it any different for those snakes that are naturally nocturnal? Any answers or comments are GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks alot.

First, get your snake's cage away from the window. Direct sunlight can raise the temps in the enclosure to dangerous levels in a matter of minutes. I have known people who have cooked their snakes to death this way. Kingsnakes require no additional lighting whatsoever other than the ambient light in the room you are keeping them in. They are primarily a nocturnal species and don't need the type of lighting tropical snakes need. For heat, use an under the tank heat pad or strip. For additional ambient heat, I sometimes use a ceramic heat emitter that puts off no light at all.

According to scientific literature, snakes have evolved a liver that allows them to get the calcium and vitamin D that they need from their prey.

Snakes do NOT need to bask to get these nutrients, unlike turtles and lizards - which are basking creatures.

Kingsnakes, in particular, are usually nocturnal. They need no basking nor UVB light whatsoever. (Regardless of what "enthusiastic" pet store employees imply, trying to increase their sale.)

It is best to heat with an under-tank strip, avoiding "hot rocks" or bulbs. Enjoy saving money every week!
