Injury to Tail

sparkles Dec 14, 2004 07:15 PM

My Bearded Dragon's tail got caught in the screen part of the top and had a little indentation mark about an inch from the tip. When the tail shed, the tip did not shed. When I got his nails clipped at the pet shop, the owner said to put neosporin on the tip twice a day or he might lose it. After a week of neosporin, the part with the indentation lost its scales and I guess some flesh because there is now a quarter inch line of red where the indentation was. Any info on tail injuries will be appreciated. Is he losing the tip? Should I continue the neosporin? Should I take him to a vet? Wait and see? Thanks.

Actually I think the red is a good sign, it shows there is blood flow and it's not necrotic. I'd keep doing the neosporin and keep an eye on it. What happens with some just on its own is that a ring of skin won't shed and then it cuts off circulation causing the tissue beyond it to go necrotic and fall off. It's definitely something to watch for. When this happens you have to soften the unshed skin and somehow get it off. I've heard of everything from neosporin, baby oil, mineral oil, ky jelly, vaseline, hydrogen peroxide (not sure about this one), etc. I usually use mineral oil but don't see any reason why neosporin wouldn't work.
