light question

Mike4284m Dec 14, 2004 11:15 PM

I have no immediate plans of keeping any reptiles just yet but I was curious as to whether this type of bulb would emit UVB? I have kept herps before but have always used regular NO flourescent bulbs. This bulb is actually being used to grow plants and macroalgae for marine setups. Thanks.

It is doubtful that the bulb your referring to has proper UVB for reptiles. There are so many UVB bulbs on the market for reptiles that I'm wondering why you would want to go with something like that. There are several good brands of mercury vapor bulbs but I would say stick to the the top 3; Powersun, Capture The Sun and Active-UV. There are a few good fluorescents but perhaps stick to Reptisun bulbs or the UVB Mystic brand.

I have used all of the above bulbs with very good success.

It may be important to remember that not all herps REQUIRE uv type bulbs so before you get into the cost etc. of them male sure what you plan on getting is in need of them. But I would definitely go with herp tested light source like those mentioned in the other thread, or any of the flourescent tube brands out there.
