Tank Size for an Egyptian

Triad Dec 15, 2004 09:46 AM

As you all know I lost Orion, my male saharan uro, back in early November. I'm going to be getting an egyptian uromastyx, I don't want to call him a replacement because no thing can ever replace Orion, sometime in April 2005.

I'd like to know how much I need to save up to get the best tank for my egyptian.

Substrate suggestions and hide suggestions are both welcome.

I just want to know what those of you who have egyptians use for substrate, hide's and also how big the tank is (I know some people build, but I do not have the tools to build like automatic saws).

Any input on the subject is greatly appreciated.

Thanks and have a Happy Holiday Season!

I keep my 20" male in a 4X2X2 vision. For an adult, I think you need at least this much, it gives them space to at least run around in. In the mornings I put him outside on my patio for about an hour so he can bask in real sunlight. I use a mixture of sand and birdseed as substrate. My two yearlings I keep in a custom made 4X2X2 with the same substrate.

I would think for an Egyptian because of their large adult size you would want something even bigger. I would recommend at least a 2x2x6 if not bigger...a friend of mine keeps egyptians and he keep a pair in a 10x3x3 cattle trough filled up with a soil/vermic/peat mix.

Anyway, just my input.

I definately agree with Chris, the bigger the better. I wish I had a backyard! I plan on adding a 'herp room' in my backyard one day when I get my own house. As for now, I use my apartment room as a herp room! At least I don't get lonely and it's never cold.
The breeding facility of the breeder (Noel from Hacienda Anura) I got my egyptians from is awesome! They're outdoor terrariums the size of two swimming pools each and he has anywhere from 7-10 in his huge backyard with each one having like 100 uros. Each one had different species of uro... malis, gehryis, egyptians, somalians, etc. He even tried to mimick the natural habitat for each.... lots of rocks and hiding places. He didn't use any heating devices, just natural sunlight.
