pope's viper

2snakes Dec 15, 2004 09:53 AM

I am considering getting a Pope's Viper. I already have a copperhead as well as several non-venomous snakes. I was wondering if any of you know anything about them that you would like to share with me. Any information is appreciated.

I have several adults as well as some babies. What do you want to know? They are among my favorites.

I was just wondering about their temperment mainly. Also any specifics about their upkeep or requirements would be great. Pretty much anything you can tell me about them would be appreciated.

Germany is probably the hotbed for captive Popes, and the Trims in general. W. Wuster is quite possibly the most well versed in Trims that I know of. Having said that, my advice pales in comparison.

Popes are delicate. They can be finicky eaters. Don't underestimate their striking range or speed. They are very active at night, sleeping most of the day. They need moderate tempertures (78-82) and you have to watch the humidity levels. Shedding can be difficult if too dry. I have mine in arboreal enclosures, but one remains in the ground, although at night she's all over. They eat rodents, pre killed, and eat about once every 3-5 weeks. It depends, so watch them. They don't need bright light, just warmth, so a heat lamp is good enough.

I love my Popes. They are gorgeous animals. Be careful when you hook them. They will run up the shaft very quickly and can move fast on the ground, so again, don't underestimate their speed...
