I'm worried about my leo, speckles....

-ryan- Dec 15, 2004 07:43 PM

I got him around 1.5 to 2 weeks ago, and he was around 6 monthes old. He's been acting great up until a couple of days ago. He started shedding a little (not sure if this might be the reason he's acting strange), and since then he hasn't been in the warm side a whole lot, he hasn't eaten, and the last poop he did had what looked like a whole cricket in it. I thought maybe temps might have something to do with it, so I adjusted the warm side a little bit. i found that the UTH was only underneath half the warm side hide spot, which is not enough for him to get his whole little body heated up. So I switched that with the warm humid hide. The thermometer on the hot side reads about exactly 90 degrees... it was a little colder before (like early/mid 80's). Should it go down a little, or is it fine?

90 degrees is fine. i use heat tape in my breeding racks, and right above the heat tape is 90 degrees. how meny hides do you have? and that poop may have been throw-up. it happens sometimes if they get excited.

Okay, I'll just leave him alone for a couple of days and see if he eats anything. I did switch his hides though, so now I'm a little worried the change will stress him out, but I think it will be better to have the regular hide directly over the heat pad, and the humid hide only half on the heat pad (i don't think it's really very important for that to be completely over the pad since the leo won't be able to rest his belly directly on it).

Now that you mention it, I think it was throw up, because it just didn't look like it came out his rectum at all. Plus, I discovered soon after that he also pooped today and it looked fine.

Might all this have something to do with his shedding? I know with most snakes shedding is just extra stress and everything, so could it be the same with my leo?

Thanks. I think I'll leave everything alone in his cage besides changing water and putting a dish of crix in. I'll see what happens in a day or two.

i doubt it has to do with just shedding. when a reptile gets stressed, it ussually lasts a while. but you should have 3 hides. one on the cold, one on the worm, and the humid hide on half and half.

I had to take him out for the first time over the weekend to change his substrate (shelfliner)...I think he ate after that, but maybe he's stressed out. I had to pick up the hide he was under the other day to get a fugitive cricket, and that scared him again. I guess it must just be stress....so in hindsight switching the warm hide and the warm humid hide around (to allow the whole floor of the warm hide to be on the heat pad, instead of just half) was probably not the greatest idea, but now it will be better once he gets used to it, because now he has the warm hide, the cool hide, and the humid hide is sort of half on the heatpad and half off (he does have three hides). Like I said, I guess I'll just leave him alone for a bit. He's new here

Most of my leos will not eat from the time they start shedding until the first day after finished. I think it is a little stressful for them, and they get full from eating the shed.
