What happened to the Green snakes?

When I was a young boy around 8 or 9, which would have been the early 90's, I can remember going to pet stores and seeing large quanitities of green snakes for sale? What happened to these and why?

Greens are surprisingly hard to keep healthy for extended periods without adequate humidity and UV light. And they seem to need grasshoppers and caterpillars more than crickets and mealworms to stay interested in food. They sure are pretty though. I would guess that subdivisions and cats are near the top of the list of reasons they are less numerous than days gone by...
