need feeding info for sulcata

RyanDonnelly Dec 16, 2004 09:58 AM

I was just wondering if anyone could give me a list of foods in a Sulcatas diet that i could just buy at a normall grocery store? If anyone could help it would be much appreciative.

Here's my recommendation:

Chicory
Escarole
Green Leaf
Red Leaf
Romaine (sparingly)
Dandelion greens (most can order them)
Optinua pads (some can order them)
bags of field greens
Collard greens (sparingly)
Turnip Greens
Arugala

I've got 5 sulcata's, these have all worked for me. I also give them mazuri 3 times a week with calcium supplement. Hope it helped.

I never thought I'd say this but 1 to 2 times a week on the Mazuri is probably enough with the above mentioned list.

That is unless you actually want the Sulcata to grow quickly which is not really a bad thing if you are prepared for it.

The scary thing is that two of my torts are 4 yrs and only 2lbs. They eat A LOT but dont seem to grow at any great rate. They are 100% healthy. Any suggestions? I worry bc of their slow rate of growth

Why do you want it to grow faster? I've got a 6 year old Sulcata that is 2 lbs. It's curious but I'm in no hurry for it to grow. If they are healthy and look good I always suggest to not even pay attention to rate.

That is amazing that you are feeding the Mazuri 3 times a week. Are you limiting the quantity at each feeding?

If you do want them to grow faster, increase the available temperature (metabolism increases) and increase the food (building material increases)

Ive been feeding them as much of the mazuri as they will eat in a sitting (and I do this 3 times week) I dont want them to grow fast, but from what I've heard from most is that they are growing SLOWLY. The temps are 120 *f basking, 70* cool hide. They do have some pyramiding, but I soak them regularly and they have water always present.

Im about to add a lot more room to their 72 sq indoor winter enclosure which will give them a total of 160 sq feet to roam until summer. I dont think space is the issue. I also have them under mercury vapor bulbs, so i also think uvb isnt the issue. Suggestions?

The only thing I can think of is that the ground temperature is actually cooler than the 70F and that they are spending more time in the cooler temps than in the warmer temps. Also with the attempt to keep the temperatures at an acceptable level the humidity must be really low.

This might sound like a dumb question but i just need to make sure i have all the facts before i jump into this project. What is Mazuri? Thanks for all the responses.

its made by purina for tortoises. its primarily soy and grain based. while it is up for debate about if it should be fed, many have seen good results with it. I use it reguarly for my torts.

Mazuri is not a soy based diet. It is a grain based diet.

The 'jury' has been out for about 15 years now and still has not found a defect in the product.
