do caiman enjoy company?

jojay327 Dec 16, 2004 02:38 PM

IN THE PHOTO GALLERIES I OFTEN SEE PICTURES OF CAIMAN LAYING ON TOP OF EACH OTHER AND STUFF, IF THE ENCLOSURE WAS BIG ENOUGH DO YOU THINK THE CROC COULD BENEFIT FROM HAVING ANOTHER CROC WITH HIM? WOULD THERE FEEDING RESPONCE BCOME MORE AGRESSIVE BECAUSE OF COMPETITION OR WOULD ONE CROC BE DOMINANT AND THE OTHER WOULD GET LESS FOOD. WAS JUST WONDERING, THANKS

No, You see them on top of one another cause most likely it is the warmest place in the enclosure. They dont have the same feelings as us. Given in the wild you will sometimes see them together but this is based on survival (breeding, feeding, etc). Depending on the size of the enclosure they may or may not get along. One may stress the other during feeding time and the other will not get enough food or just cause general stress by being chased around, bit, and scratched until it just whithers away.

I think that caiman definitely enjoy company. I have 8 spec caiman in one enclosure and they almost always are around or on top of each other. They pair up and are usually found with the same ones in the same areas. They are hardly ever found by themselves. Sizes of my animals range from 20 inches to 4 and half feet. Everyone seems to get along. Enjoy your animals, I sure enjoy mine.
