WEIRD eye-popping

spindlerella Dec 16, 2004 02:58 PM

I just got my first beardy about 1 1/2 months ago. Anyways, just when I thought I learned all I could about beardies and their behaviors, typical Spindle gave me a run for my money when I was holding him and he suddenly BULGED his eyes WAY out. I got startled and almost dropped the poor baby. Can anyone tell me about this phenomenon? I couldn't find any info anywhere. thanks!

This is a very normal behavior. It doesn't happen a lot but they do it to help loosen skin around their eyes preparing for a shed. It looks pretty freaky.

My beardie used to do that from time to time, I've heard it's from shedding, someone told me that some lizards do it to relieve some type of pressure. She still does it once in a while. It freaked me out the first time my Australian Water Dragon did it, I thought his eyes were going to explode out of his head, he is a pretty big boy with big eyes!

It's normal though, no worries. As long as his eyes are fine and healthy looking when he's not buldging them, don't worry.
