Rescue with very bad skin condition. need help

deuce02 Dec 16, 2004 03:28 PM

ok, I have this thing for taking in unwanted beardeds. This is my first "rescue" and 3rd overall adopted bearded. I believe they all deserve a second chance, but this ones a hard one!
I took her in about 6-8 months ago, and shes was in rough shape. She has a really bad skin condition. ever since i took her in, she has a really yellow ting to some areas and some really nasty bumps. I took her to my vet and they biopsied some of them. Well they put her on antibiotics thinkig it was some sort of bacteria infection. that didnt work, infact it got worse. I took her into the vet after the antibiotics seemed to have no effect on it. I was reading on the internet about some sort of fungus that beardeds sometimes can catch, I took the article in and they decided to put her on some sort of antifungle gel. well its been about 2 months of trying to get this undercontrol with no success. Shes only getting worse. Shes down from 320 grams to 245!!!! she eats but not as much as she could be. I need to know if you had anything like this in the past. I really feeling she might be heading further down hill and i might have to put her down. I really dont want that but i dont want her to suffer more! I call her helga aka the hellbeast because when i took her in, she was meaner than any other bearded ive had. Now shes a sweatheart. Hoping i can help this. Its turning into the yellow spots and bumps, some have opened up and are like sores. I dont know what to do. I attached a pic when i first took her in. ill try and get pics of her now.

i know someone will ask.
Her housing is perfect. It has been since she has been in my care. Im not sure about her prior home. But she must have been fed ok there. She was 19" and 320 grams at 11 months. looked in ok shape other then the skin looking weird. It just kept getting worse.

Here is a link for some "herp vets" by state.

http://www.anapsid.org/vets/#vetlis

You might do some other searches on the net for vets who specialize or are well known for their reptile expertise as well.
In my experience, "regular vets" (no offense to vets) are often clueless regarding even basic matters of reptile care and health. Much less some obscure/or not reptile disease.

Good luck with your animals,

Ian

my vet is listed on that site. She has worked with reptiles a long while. Its not a typical dog and cat vet. They specialize in reptiles and birds. We have 4 quaker parrots in our family, all of them are taken to this vet. We are treating it as a fungus now and nothing seems to be helping. I just dont know what else to do.....

Sorry I can't be of more help. Perhaps a second opinion is in order?

Good luck,

Ian

Awww, poor thing, have you tried the Nolvasan soaks and debriefing the areas with a soft toothbrush? that needs to be done first for the topicals to reach the active fungus, otherwise your just stacking it up on top of dead tissue. The nolvasan is key to the treatment adn I do not think for looking at her you have tried that... when you do, don't freak, you are going to see also off excess skin coming off and probably some scales too, but it is tissue that is already dead, the nolvasan is not killing it, its removing the dead tissue.

Also you need to be using a good probiotic at the same time daily, like Acidolphiliz

Let me know when you have the nolvason and I will walk you through the treatment routines

BTW, the fungus she most likely has will not culture normally.

The pic i posted is an older pic when i first took her in. My vet gave me a betadine solution to scrub her with prior to the cream. Is this going to do the same thing as the stuff u mentioned? If not will i have to go to my vet to get it? Also, they gave me an anti-fungal cream my vet gave me but i have recently ran out. I read your article and you mentioned some yeast infection creams such as monistat. Is there a certain type that you suggest trying at this point? Thank you so much for all your help, and im sure my bearded thanks you.
