Feeding response

CaptainHook2 Dec 16, 2004 08:07 PM

My burm is going on 2 & 1/2 months without eating now. I corrected the temps and humidity. I quit thawing Jumbo rats as he kept refusing them. Now, they've been in the freezer for so long I think they're bad. About once a week I put a live small rat (food for my balls) in just to see what he'll do. Recently he's responded very quickly but will not strike. He sniffs it, then lays his head down. Could this be he wants a real meal? I was thinking about purchasing a rabbit but I am incredibly strapped for cash and throwing away $10 rabbits because he won't eat is not in my budget. I fully intend to go F/T or P/K once I know he's eating again. Please advise.

from what i have always been told is males eat when they feel like it, and somtimes thats not very often....
A friend has a male that only eats once a month maybe...
If he isnt sick and everything else if fine there probobly isnt much you can do...
good luck

without being re-frozen?? I was not aware of this and could be a problem for me. My yearling burm and female Dumerils boa are the only ones currently eating rats and lately have been refusing to eat. My dumerils boa is very picky so it doesnt surprise me but with my burm it comes as a shock. Is it a bad idea to order large amounts of prey all at once? The only reasons I can think of that my burm won't eat is the antibiotics hes on, or they have gotten in his stomache, or just the fact that his body knows its winter and metabolism slows down. I can't quite figure it out but if he refuses to eat in the next week I'm just going to ahead and buy a few live rats and see his reaction.

We have a 7 foot coastal carpet that hasn't eaten in 5 months, with no "apparent" ill effects. The vet suggested a product called "jump start". Catch is it needs to be force fed to the snake to get him/her started. It's no more than an appetite stimulant. But seems to help. Good luck!
