My son and I made our sixth trip to West Texas earlier this month from 6/20 - 6/28. In seven nights of hunting we saw 45 snakes:
6 - western diamondback rattlers
2 - prairie rattlers
2 - rock rattlers
1 - trans-pecos copperhead
1 - ground snake
1 - black head snake
2 - black hood snake
1 - hooknose snake
3 - great plains ratsnake
1 - checkered gartersnake
1 - New Mexico milksnake
9 - night snakes
3 - coachwhips
2 - central Texas whipsnakes
1 - bairds ratsnake
1 - desert kingsnake
4 - longnose snakes
2 - trans-pecos ratsnakes
2 - bullsnakes
Our most productive night was south and east of Marathon, which area had received a lot of precip a couple of days before. The splendida was found 8 miles west of Langtry on the edge of an incoming storm from the east. The pic was found in a riparian habitat on US 90 next to a large cut about 20 miles east of Marathon. The bairdi was found 2 miles north of Baker's Crossing. The two suboculari were found on river road (mud flat) and near Stillwell Store on black gap road. The leps were found 3 miles west of Sanderson and 20 miles east of Iraan. The celaenops was found 8 miles east of Marathon next to an under-road watercrossing. All in all a great trip, but no graybands this year. We saw other hunters on black gap and on 277. To my knowledge no one found any alterna the week we were there. Well there's always next year. msdds
