Locality does anyone know the answer???? may be for those more experienced

Ok so last summer i was backpacking in the back country of New Mexico. While we were in base camp my friends thought he had a rattlesnake in his ten. He camp running out as i camp running with my snake stick. After i heard no rattleing and i positively ID'ed it as a bullsnake. This was the first live experience with bulls snakes iv had. The snake was pretty, well at least i thought so, most of the others in the crew didnt think so. I bagged him up and took him afaw from base camp and released him near a nice creek and some trees.

Now for the hard question. This took place about a mile out side of Cimmaron NM. Does anyone know what Locality would be in this area. Id really like to know because i found a lot of snakes in this area but did not take any because they look a lot better in the natural enviroment than they do in a cage but id like to have one of this locality but captive bred.

thanks for the help in advance

I'm not sure where Cimmaron NM is located at but Sonoran Gophers range most of that state . I think Bull Snakes range long the eastern border of the state . May be what you found is a Sonoran Gopher, they can be hard to tell apart.
I dont think any body is working with that locality at least what I know of .

thanks for the responce. Cimarron is located in the far north west corner of the state i believe. Im positive it was a bullsnake because i had two diffrent rangers who work out there to positive id it for me because i never really worked with them before. I am also sure it was not a gopher because i recently got a picture of one from my stepdads mom who lives in UT it it looked was diffrent than the bull i saw, thought it did look a little bit alike

thanks again

"Cimarron is located in the far north west corner of the state i believe"

if you're talking about the cimarron i know -- east of taos, then it's in the NE quarter of the state and probably in an area where the sonoran and bull intergrade. just to the north it's pretty solid bullsnake country and to the southwest gopher. six of one, half dozen of the other.

undoubtedly beautiful nonetheless.

Philmont Scout Ranch is the place im talking about. We spend the night at a hostil in Taos, it was a good time but the town seemed dead to me but mabe it was just where we were.

I swear I've been meaning to wade thru all the back posts for this question and I may have even tried to before, but I have a six and a half foot adopted bull/sonoran female and I go back an forth on what to call her every six weeks. Right now, she's a sonoran. How to key out? Please? Help!

(One thing I have noted that's probably irrelevant is she's got a great design like jewelry on the back of her neck and head...lot of bulls seem to have a solid tan head, and she's got some patterning on the ventral side.)

I doubt if anyone is working with that locality, gophers and bullsnakes haven't really been bred for locality as much as some other species.Probably the only way to get a captive bred one from that locality would be to go catch a pair,or several pairs for unrelated offspring, and breed them yourself.Don't feel bad about it,all captive bred snakes are descended from wild caught snakes.I am raising a whole clutch of CB locality milksnakes, and I know exactly which rocks their parents were found under, its more fun than breeding generic snakes with no background to them.
