Bull snake Locality ? anyone know what locality,

rttlrvenom Dec 17, 2004 04:41 PM

Ok so last summer i was backpacking in the back country of New Mexico. While we were in base camp my friends thought he had a rattlesnake in his ten. He camp running out as i camp running with my snake stick. After i heard no rattleing and i positively ID'ed it as a bullsnake. This was the first live experience with bulls snakes iv had. The snake was pretty, well at least i thought so, most of the others in the crew didnt think so. I bagged him up and took him afaw from base camp and released him near a nice creek and some trees.

Now for the hard question. This took place about a mile out side of Cimmaron NM. Does anyone know what Locality would be in this area. Id really like to know because i found a lot of snakes in this area but did not take any because they look a lot better in the natural enviroment than they do in a cage but id like to have one of this locality but captive bred.

thanks for the help in advance

The locality would be "near Cimmaron, NM." If you mean what subspecies, I think it's just sayi, but I'd have to check a field guide to make sure. Locality doesn't matter much except to gray-banded kingsnake breeders; most species exhibit sufficient variation in color/pattern that you can get something that resembles the snake you saw in the wild, without having to get a snake from the same particular area.

Even if it's CB, by your statement it wouldn't look very good compared to a wild one. There are a few Pituophis breeders. I would suggest looking for bullsnake breeders and going through all the pics till you find some that look similar to the one you saw.
