Best Leiocephalus Substrate

Howitser Dec 17, 2004 05:29 PM

What's the best substrate for a pair of Leocephalus'? Right now I've just got one of the "critter carpet" type things on the bottom of the cage, and my female has started to hide under it. I have places for them to hide, so I'm not sure why she's doing this. Any suggestions for something better to put down, that won't give their prey easy places to escape to & hide?

Thanks,

Howie

I finally got my pair and have them on washed playsand. I work at the store where I bought them and they always hid under the carpet, so I did a trial run with sand before I brought them home and they love it. They are big burrowers (sp?) and spend a good portion of the day buried.

Thanks for the info! I'll look into the sand... I was going to use the marketed Lizard Litter or something similar, but if sand works, I'll go with that. There's no worry that they'll ingest some & get impacted though?

Playsand is EXTREMELY cheaper than those that the pet stores sell. I paid $2 for 50 pounds. You should be able to find it at Menards, Lowes, Toys-r-us. There's always a minor chance of impaction, but I always watch mine when they eat and they never really seem to get anything but the cricket. You could always feed them in a separte container if they seem to want to get a mouthful of sand with their food.
