I will be purchasing my own website soon, who is good to go through. And about how much does it cost to have a descent site?

Eli,
As I'm sure you know, I design websites for a living (or part of my living). I've got my hands full, so I'm not accepting any new clients right now, but just to give you an idea, my design costs can range from $500 to $5,000, depending on how big the site is and many other variables. A larger site like mine would cost around $4,000, whereas a smaller site like BawaaHerps.com would be around $1,000. Something with less custom graphic work would be even less expensive.
In the future, I'm going to be offering a website package that will include software to allow you to upload and label your own photos, but that's probably a good six months away.
I'm not sure what his prices are, but Nathan Hall (Geckos Unlimited) does some great reptile related web work as well.

As for hosting, you'll be looking at spending somewhere between $5 and $25 per month, depending on the size of your site and the features and technology that your site employs.

Hey I do not know a lot about that. Other than I did a search, picked what looked to be the cheapest. Ended with godaddy.com, actually I was a bit taken aback with that name, but it worked.
I paid what it said, and in a couple of days, deadrats.net, was mine, it goes to my ISP page, just what I wanted. There are others. Why to choose them is again a mystery, but in general, it works.
Just look for the best price and fill out the form. It really is as easy as that. Around $20 (US) is the going rate, per url per year.

Thanks for the kind words, Anthony. I've just done a few sites for some of my gecko buddies ( timtytle.com, geckosbybrad.com, mbreptiles.com, texaslizard.com, etc.). I'm pretty much a hack when it comes to web design. I still code all of my sites and put 'em through Dreamweaver to clean 'em up. I definitely don't design with the dial-up folks in mind. My sites load slowly!! C’est la vie!

No problem, Nathan. I think I like your sites so much because your style is a lot like mine. Graphics are clean, very neat layouts and easy to navigate...no "mystery" buttons, etc. I swear 90% of web developers somehow forget that they won't be the only person trying to navigat the website.
I say "Screw 'em if they're still on dialup."
just kidding. If you want to optimize files for quicker loading, try using Fireworks or even the "save for web" feature in Photoshop.

i have heard that you have to pay some search engines for them to "find" your website. this doesnt really make sense to me (with some of the junk sites that have been neglected for years pop up on google) is that true?
what are the variables that put your webpage on the first few pages of a search? most keywords, newest update, biggest, etc...?
i thought it was most keywords, but for example i typed in reptile cages, and got some off the wall stuff after like page two. i know there are more reptile cage sites out there why dont they show up closer to the front pages of the search?
sorry to use your post for my own purposes rhacophile, just some stuff i was curious about

I just put my website up this week. I still want to do some work to it, but it is up for everyone to see. I went through kingsnake to host and purchase my domain. I don't think it is the cheapest option, but it is reasonable, and I can be listed in the breeder listings and buy advertising.
I used Webstudio 4.0 software to create. It is not nearly as nice a Anthonys but it will get the job done, and it was fairly easy to do.

Could you please break down the cost for me? I would appriciate it, also how much do you pay up front? Are you charged monthly?
